According to a report from The Sun, Championship side Blackburn Rovers are set to complete the signing of Waterford’s 19-year-old midfielder starlet Alex Phelan after he underwent a successful trial with the Lancashire based side.
Waterford youngster Alex Phelan is reportedly set to complete a move to Championship club Blackburn Rovers ahead of the January transfer window, after he enjoyed a successful trial period with Rovers.
Phelan has been training with Rovers over the course of the past week and he has impressed the coaching staff enough to earn himself a deal with the Ewood Park outfit. The report from The Sun states that Phelan – as he is out of contract – will only cost a small compensation fee, which will be welcomed by the “cash-strapped” Irish club.
The 19-year-old midfielder is said to have first caught the attention of Blackburn Rovers in an SSE Airtricity League Under-19 Final tie with Galway United, in which he scored two goals in a 3-1 victory for the club. The vast majority of Phelan’s football with Waterford has been played in the club’s youth ranks, making his way through the academy.
Phelan has played once for the club’s senior side, coming off the bench at half-time in a Challenge Cup match against Hearts’ second-string side, scoring in a 3-1 win over the Scottish club’s B-team.
Should his proposed move to Blackburn Rovers go through, it is likely that Phelan will link up with the club’s youth sides in an effort to make his way into the first-team, a passage youngsters such as John Buckley and Lewis Travis have followed recently to become regulars for Tony Mowbray’s side.
