AFC Wimbledon beat Premier League competition to sign non-league defender

AFC Wimbledon were able to beat Premier League competition to confirm the signing of Met Police’s Nesta Guinness-Walker as confirmed by the club website.

While the Met Police team, formerly a works side for the London police force, may not be that well-known, they did get some attention this season. They made it to the First Round of the FA Cup and while they were eliminated at that stage by Newport County, who’d also get plenty of attention in the competition later on, and many were impressed with the way they played.

The person who grabbed the attention though was Guinness-Walker, a 19-year-old left-back who had been impressing for them in the Southern League. Lots of scouts went to Met Police to watch the young player and he even trained at a couple of Premier Leagues with a view to move to them. However he has decided to sign with AFC Wimbledon, penning his first ever professional contract with them.

After the signing was confirmed, he said: “I thought it would be a bit nerve-racking coming from a semi-professional environment to a professional environment, but it’s such a tight family club. I had lunch with the manager on my first day! You can see from the relationship with the fans that it’s just one big family. I am so happy that I can be a part of it.”

“It’s every young boy’s dream to come and join this club, to be a part of it. It’s a great feeling for me to be able to say that I’ve officially done it, the club has welcomed me with open arms. I came and watched the game against Bristol Rovers and I enjoyed everything about the club. I can’t wait to get started.”
